Starting A Garden? Make Sure You Use Topsoil

Blog

If you are starting a new garden, this can take up a lot of time and hard work. Because of this, you need to ensure your flowers grow healthy for you. One thing you can do to improve the garden is use topsoil. Below is information on what this is, as well as information on using this soil for your garden. You can then purchase the topsoil at a home improvement store or garden center.

Topsoil

The first five to 10 inches of your soil is considered topsoil. Topsoil can be sand or clay-based and has a high amount of organic matter that is great for gardens. This soil holds moisture in to keep the soil wet and provides nutrients to the soil that will make your garden grow healthy plants and flowers.

Using Topsoil

When purchasing topsoil for your garden, make sure it has the right nutrients for your flowers and plants. The employee at the home improvement store or garden center can help you with this. You can purchase this soil in bags or if you need a lot of it, you can have it delivered directly to your home. If you are planting seeds, the topsoil can protect them and provide nutrients to give the seeds a good start. If your soil does not have the right nutrients, such as the wrong pH levels, the topsoil can take care of this problem as well. Topsoil also helps with drainage when it rains or when you water your flowers. This means the water penetrates deep into the soil directly to the roots of each flower or plant.

When first installing a new garden, you can purchase blended topsoil, which is topsoil mixed with garden soil to give the garden a good start. Purchase enough topsoil so that you can put several inches on top of your garden. Once it is placed, use a tiller to mix the topsoil in with the garden soil. If you have a small garden, you can use a rake to mix it.

If you add nutrients to your soil, such as fertilizer, the topsoil will help maintain the nutrients in the soil. Put a layer of mulch over the topsoil and this can add to making sure your flowers and plants stay healthy. This is because mulch holds in moisture and prevents weeds from growing in the garden.

Understanding Landscaping Planning

About a year ago, I realized that part of the reason the plants in my yard kept dying was the fact that they were planted in the wrong places. I didn't pay much attention to which plants needed certain amounts of light, and it was costing them their lives. Several of the plants were really struggling to live, and it was really hard to see. I realized that if I ever wanted to make things right, I would need to create a landscaping plan that would work well for the natural landscape of my yard. This blog is all about understanding landscaping.
